AN INDEPENDENT AUDIT

Corporations have long recognized the value of the independent audit. In such an objective accounting, any financial wrong-doing is brought to light, and all assets and liabilities are clearly identified. This kind of honest, rigorous assessment makes positive change possible. In the same way, through the process of confession, our soul is "independently audited" by God Himself. When our wrong-doing is revealed, we are pierced to the heart with our sin, and keenly conscious of our need for forgiveness in specific areas.

Why not ask God today to audit your life and show you the results? If you are unsure about where to begin, read the Ten Commandments, asking the Holy Spirit to convict you of specific sins. Or consider what theologians have called "the seven deadly sins"-laziness, gluttony, greed, lust, envy, anger and pride-and ask God to show you how you have allowed them to take root in your heart. When the audit is complete, agree with God concerning your sin. Just as the Israelites would place their hands on the head of their animal sacrifices as if to "own" their sin, "own" yours, saying, "Yes, Lord, this is mine."

Audits are useless to the firms that commission them unless wrong actions are rectified, and steps are put in place to prevent them from happening again. Don't stop short in your audit. Follow the process through by confession and repentance, owning up to and turning away from the sin that God reveals.
