THE VERDICT
Even today, we have many pictures of Jesus. The six-hour film Jesus of Nazareth has been seen by over 100 million television
viewers worldwide, and additional millions of film go-ers. The musical Godspell was a Broadway hit and later a movie depicting a
whimsical, child-like Christ who sang and danced His way into the hearts of His followers. Then Broadway brought us the
harder-edged version of the Savior in Jesus Christ, Superstar-a sort of cult figure with a rag-tag following and a tragic end. And
perhaps the most distorted popular picture of Jesus was seen in The Last Temptation of Christ-a disturbed, reluctant Messiah
who was a sinner like you and me.
There are "snapshots" of Jesus everywhere...but which one of them (if any) is the
real Jesus? Who exactly is He? I have a feeling many in our modern world would like to ask, "Will the real Jesus please stand
up?" Not a caricature, an exaggeration or a composite of Him, but the real Jesus. Who is He?
Nearly 2,000 years ago,
Jesus asked His small band of disciples this same question. But the real issue then-and now-is not who others say Jesus is.
We will not be held accountable for their answers. It's who each one of us as individuals say He is. Peter rightly answered, "You'
re the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God." And Jesus said, "That's it! You've got it!" Don't allow others to define for
you the identity of Jesus Christ. Search the Bible. Ask questions. Pray for understanding. But find out for yourself. The way you
answer this question will matter forever.
